More light being shed on payments to physicians

Pharma Compliance Alert, November 28, 2007

Beginning in January, orthopedic surgeons will have to tell patients about any financial relationships they have with the medical device industry that relate to the patient's treatment under a new set of professional standards from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS).

The AAOS mandate is just the latest attempt to shed light on financial relationships between physicians and the pharmaceutical and medical device industry. Minnesota, Maine, Vermont, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia currently have laws requiring pharmaceutical and device manufacturers to report payments they make to physicians.

The interest in payments to physicians extends to the national level. Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) introduced the Physician Payment Sunshine Act of 2007 earlier this year. If passed, the act would require pharmaceutical and device companies to disclose any payment to a physician of over $25.
