GlaxoSmithKline allegedly tried to intimidate Avandia critic

Pharma Compliance Alert, November 21, 2007

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) allegedly tried to silence Dr. John Buse, an independent scientist who criticized GSK's diabetes drug Avandia, according to a Senate Finance Committee report.

At scientific meetings in 1999, Buse gave speeches suggesting Avandia carried cardiovascular risks. In July 2007, FDA scientists estimated Avandia had caused approximately 83,000 excess heart attacks since coming on the market.

According to the report, GSK branded Buse a "renegade" and silenced his concerns about Avandia by complaining to his superiors and threatening a lawsuit.
