Electronic medical records may cause a decrease in malpractice claims, according to a new study conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School. Physicians in Massachusetts experienced drops in the number of malpractice claims following the use of electronic medical records, though researchers were unable to determine a direct link between the two. After tracking malpractice cases for 275 physicians between 2005 and 2007, researchers estimated malpractice claims were 84% less likely after electronic medical records were adopted.

Researchers note that the study was limited to a select group of physicians in Massachusetts and that factors other than electronic health records, such as physicians’ styles of medicine and changes to the state’s healthcare system, could account for the reduction of malpractice claims.
