Consultations with nurse practitioners improves quality of patient care

Researchers with the Mayo Clinic found that a consultative visit between a nurse practitioner and a cancer patient can improve the patient’s emotional and mental well-being. Half of the patients enrolled in the study met with a nurse practitioner to learn how their symptoms could be managed and discuss advance directives, and all patients who received intervention showed significant improvement in their emotional health compared to patients who did not discuss their treatment with a nurse practitioner.
The study noted that because many clinics focus the majority of their efforts on treatments, they miss opportunities to provide additional support to help improve patients’ quality of life. Having a nurse practitioner trained in palliative care and offering consultation services to patients could improve overall quality, according to researchers.
