EMR implementations improve quality measures for hospitals

Hospitals that have implemented advanced electronic medical record (EMR) systems have seen improvements in quality measures and patient safety, according to a report from Healthcare Information Management and Systems Society (HIMSS) Analytics and global research firm The Advisory Board Company.
Though actual quality and patient safety measure successes were not measured, chief information officers reported success when specific safety and quality measures were targeted. Of the hospitals surveyed, nearly 80% reported multiple safety measure benefits and core measure benefits, with adverse drug event reduction being the most commonly reported benefit.
More than half of respondents targeted improvements in quality measures for stroke, congestive heart failure, venous thromboembolism, acute myocardial infarction, and surgical patients.
