New York hospital faces vast quantity of lawsuits

More than 100 patients or families of patients have filed lawsuits against Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, according to the New York Daily News. Larger hospitals in the area, including New York Methodist Hospital and Maimonides Medical Center, face far fewer open lawsuits despite having double the number of beds in use compared to Brookdale. Similarly sized hospitals in the area, such as Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, Interfaith Medical Center, and Brooklyn Hospital Center, report an average of 40–50 open lawsuits.
Allegations against the hospital include deaths due to negligence and malpractice, infection that led to amputation, wrongfully administered medicine, and negligence during childbirth leading to brain and nervous system injuries. Brookdale has suffered huge operating losses in previous years, and has been recommended by the state panel for a merger.
