Nurses' access to data improves quality of care

Making data available and accessible for all nurses could have a tremendous impact on patient care, according to HealthLeaders Media. Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, NH, implemented a clinical documentation system in 2007, which has since evolved into a computerized system that relies heavily on input from the organization’s nurses. The system has improved catheter days, patient profiles, and medication reconciliations, leading to better care, according to the hospital.
The Catholic Medical Center is only one of many hospitals to discover the benefits of involving nurses in informatics. Many organizations are finding that nurses can use electronic medical record systems to respond to patients and perform documentation faster while providing a higher level of care. Nurses are also able to use data to demonstrate staff deployment needs, which in turn improves quality and patient satisfaction.
