A study published in the August 11 issue of The Lancet Infectious Disease shows prevalence of a new antibiotic resistant “superbug,” found predominantly in India, Pakistan, and the UK.

Researchers found cases of New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase 1 (NDM-1), a type of Gram-negative Enterobacteriaceae, which is highly resistant to antibiotics, and urged health experts to continue surveillance.

“The potential of NDM-1 to be a worldwide public health problem is great, and coordinated international surveillance is needed,” the authors wrote.
