Research findings released in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicate MRSA infection rates have decreased in healthcare settings from 2005 to 2008.

Researchers at the CDC analyzed MRSA infections in nine metropolitan areas totaling 15 million people.

The incident rate of hospital-onset MRSA was 1.02 per 10,000 in 2005, and decreased 9.4% per year, according to the study. Healthcare-associated community-onset MRSA infections decreased 5.7% each year.

The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America released a statement indicating they were encouraged by the results of the study, but urged for more research to determine which prevention tools are most effective.
