A recent survey released by APIC during its annual conference found that half of infection preventionists (IP) believe that catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) continue to be a problem in their hospital. IPs cites lack of time, resources, and leadership commitment as major deterrents of successful prevention measures.

About half of respondents said they spend more time on surveillance and not enough on prevention efforts.

“Bloodstream infections from catheters are nearly 100% preventable with clear, actionable steps,” said APIC 2010 President Cathryn Murphy, RN, PhD, CIC in a press release. “Many hospitals have seen their rates decline dramatically – some have gotten to zero and have maintained that. It is disturbing that some hospitals still report having difficulty implementing best practices to avoid these infections.”
