Many facilities have been using the ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) bundle to reduce the number of infections among patients on ventilators, and a recent study proves those hospitals have benefitted from the interventions.

A study published in the Archives of Surgery examined patients in two surgical intensive care units at Boston Medical Center after implementing the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s VAP bundle.

Prior to the bundle the VAP rate was 10.2 cases per 1,000 ventilator days. After a significant increase in compliance in each unit, the rate decreased to 3.2 cases per 1,000 ventilator days, with an estimated cost savings of more than $1 million.
