After confirming the 11th case of vancomycin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) since 2002, the CDC is reminding clinical laboratories and infection preventionists about their role in diagnosing and preventing this dangerous infection.

The CDC urges labs to revisit their procedures for identifying VRSA and offers an algorithm with testing methodologies.

Prompt coordination with public health authorities and effective management of the patient by the infection prevention staff – including isolation – is crucial to preventing transmission.
