A study published in the May 2010 issue of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology evaluated the efficiency of universal gloving with emollient impregnated gloves compared with contact precautions to prevent MDROs.

The study showed that universal gloving prompted better adherence to hand hygiene, improved skin health, without a significant change in rates of infection. The authors concluded that universal gloving may be an alternative to more traditionally used contact precautions.
