The study presented at the Fifth Decennial International Conference on Healthcare-Associated Infections indicates that C. diff infections are more prevalent than MRSA, particularly in southeast community hospitals.
Researchers at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, studied patients at 30 community hospital in the Duke Infection Control Outreach Network over an 18-month period and found that C. diff infections were 21% more common than MRSA and approximately as common as hospital-wide bloodstream infections.
Fortunately, this week the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology (SHEA) and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) released new clinical practice guidelines on C. diff, updating the original guideline published more than 15 years ago.
