New preoperative skin preparations reduce SSIs

Authors of a new study, published in the January 7 New England Journal of Medicine, found that using chlorhexidine-alcohol for surgical prep significantly lowered the overall rate of infection from 16.1% with providone-iodine to 9.5% with chlorhexidine-alcohol. Chlorhexidine was particularly effective against superficial incisional infections (4.2% compared to 8.6% with providone-iodine) and deep incisional infections (1% vs. 3% with providone-iodine).
