A new law in Maine went into effect last week that requires all hospitals in the state to screen high-risk patients for MRSA.

The Maine Nurses Association is hailing the new law, but epidemiologists in the state argue that it’s a costly measure that isn’t the best possible way to combat the organism, according to The Maine Public Broadcasting Network.

Robert Pinsky, an epidemiologist at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor argues that frequent handwashing and isolation of infected patients is the best way to combat MRSA.

Former Maine epidemiologist Dr. John Jernigan of the CDC testified against the law, arguing that research has not proved its effectiveness.
