Tip of the week: Go back to basics with flu prevention

An op-ed article published on October 1 issue on the Journal of the American Medical Association Web site claims the debate on N95 respirators versus face masks for protection against the flu is distracting healthcare workers from basic IC best practices.
Masks and respirators should be considered the “last line of defense,” the authors claim and implementation of other proven strategies, such as annual vaccination, strict visitation policies, patient triage and isolation, and hand hygiene and cough etiquette programs should draw more focus.
