A pandemic planning conference in Minneapolis hosted by the University of Minnesota Center for Infectious Disease Reseach and Policy (CIDRAP) found that of the roughly 300 attendees, 81% said their greatest concern about the pandemic was absenteeism.
About one-third of the attendees were from the healthcare and pharmaceuticals sector. A nationwide poll by Mansfield Communications found that 84% of American workers feel the current recession increases pressure to show up for work even when sick. The poll also showed 69% of workers reported no communication from their employers about sick leave policies, which the federal government recommends.
Meanwhile 15 states and cities have paid sick leave bills in the works, according to CNNMoney.com. Concerns about pandemic flu have given some elected officials the opportunity to push harder for new legislation.
