A presidential panel estimates H1N1 (swine flu) could infect half of the U.S. population this winter and fall, hospitalizing 1.8 million people and causing as many as 90,000 deaths, according to the Washington Post.

The report notes that most cases would probably be mild, causing symptoms in 60 million to 120 million people, but up to 300,000 people could require intensive care and subsequently tie up beds in some parts of the country during the peak of the outbreak.

The estimates were based on previous pandemics and how the H1N1 virus behaved during the spring outbreaks.
