On June 3, APIC announced its support for the use of automated surveillance technologies in the healthcare setting in its position paper, “The Importance of Surveillance Technologies in the Prevention of Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs).”

Surveillance technologies allow infections preventionists to easily collect and decipher infection data, and single out clusters of HAIs quickly and efficiently.

However due to budget restrictions, most facilities still use manual surveillance, which is very labor intensive, time consuming, and limited in scope. A recent survey of APIC members found that only one in five had electronic data mining technology.
