A federal jury awarded $1 million to the family of a Vermont woman who died after complications at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, including an infection with MRSA, according to the Concord Monitor.

The jury awarded $598,000 to the estate of Katherine Coffey and $385,000 to her surviving husband for medical malpractice and wrongful death suits.

Coffey was admitted to treat fluid in her lungs. The suits alleged that during the treatment an IV line placed in her hand leaked medication into the tissue of her hand, forcing doctors to amputate several fingers. A few weeks later, Coffey died from a MRSA infection.
