Although influenza A H1N1 outbreaks continue to spread, totaling 3,009 cases in the United States as of Tuesday, federal health officials have begun focusing their attention on what the fall season will bring, according to HealthDay News.

The CDC has expressed its concern about the possible impact of swine flu when the annual flu season begins this fall. Officials are closely watching the virus throughout the Southern Hemisphere where flu season is about to start.

CDC officials also said that the current numbers are likely just a small percentage of those actually infected, because many do not seek medical attention and are never tested for swine flu.

Still, hospitals should be more prepared for this coming flu season. The swine flu scare caused the “worried-well” to flood emergency rooms and hospitals, sometimes doubling patient loads, according to CIDRAP News.
