An article published on Tuesday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal reports that although infections with antibiotic resistant bacteria such as MRSA, VRE, and C. diff are usually hazards of inpatient care, the recent emergence of these infections among patients with no predisposing factors means an increased potential for offices and clinics to harbor bacteria.

The article notes that general measures of infection control are typically sufficient in preventing these infections, but the facility should take additional precautions when dealing with a patient population that is more vulnerable.

The article suggests a multimodal approach that includes policies and guidelines about the identification and triage of patients, isolation precautions, and the availability of personal protective equipment, as well as alcohol-based hand rubs or soap and water.
