A rare and virulent strain of meningitis has infected 12 people and killed four in South Florida since December, and has left Miami-Dade county health officials unable to determine the cause.

The strain of meningitis, W135, is relatively uncommon and doesn’t usually infect groups of people at one time, according to the Miami Herald. Although there have been scattered outbreaks around the world in previous years, this is the first cluster in the United States.

Miami-Dade County is currently working with the Department of Health and the CDC to monitor the situation. The health department has sent advisories to doctors and hospitals to watch out for symptoms such as severe headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, and stiff neck.
