A report released by Consumers Union says that hospitals have made progress implementing surgical infection prevention practices, but many patients are still at risk for infections because of improper precautions. The report estimates that almost 100,000 patients between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008, were left vulnerable to developing surgical infections because hospitals failed to follow proven practices, including prescribing antibiotics right before surgery.

This number is likely higher, according to a press release, because the estimate is based on a patient sample rather than the total number of surgical patients. The report also noted that 445 hospitals across the country were in low compliance.
