Incidences of foodborne illnesses caused by contaminants such as Salmonella have remained steady over the past three years, a CDC report says. The CDC says that prevention of foodborne disease has reached a plateau and new efforts need to be evaluated.

The 2008 data, reported by the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet), included 10 state sites. Salmonella infections have remained the same, between 14 and 16 cases per 100,000 persons since 2005.

The United States Department of Agriculture’s Salmonella Initiative Program, which began in 2006, has reduced the presence of the disease in raw meat, but experts remain concerned about produce, particularly after two high profile outbreaks this year, involving peanuts and pistachios.
