If you are looking for a free and easy training tool requiring little time or effort, you may want to check out APIC’s Protect Our Patients (POP) campaign. POP is a free resource for IPs intended to inform hospital visitors about IC measures and increase patient safety, but it can also assist in training staff members.

In 2007, funded by The Clorox Company, APIC launched the campaign with the intention of creating a ready-made educational tool for hospitals. The POP kit includes a CD-ROM that shows how to implement the program, tabletop tent cards, brochures, posters that can be placed in high-traffic areas such as restrooms and elevators, as well as other resources such as a “POP” quiz about IC practices. So far, 3.7 million pieces of POP literature have been distributed to 66% of the hospitals in the country, says Scott Thomas, associate marketing manager for healthcare at Clorox’s Away from Home Division in Oakland, CA.

“We were thinking about what kind of joint effort we can put in place to help us raise awareness in the general population about how serious infection control is,” says Thomas.“There is this part of the population that spends a considerable amount of time in hospital, and they may not be up to snuff on what they need to do when they visit loved ones or when they come home, what steps they can take to help prevent the spread of infection.”
