Although MRSA is the most familiar form of antibiotic resistant organisms, a rise in carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP), which is resistant to carbapenem antibiotics, has prompted the CDC to release guidance for controlling bacteria that is carbapenem-resistant or produces the enzyme carbapenemase.
The CDC and the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) has issued new guidance to control this bacterium in the March 20 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The CDC says that it is important to allocate resources and prevention measures, particularly in acute care setting, especially while this bacterium is less prevalent.
The new guidelines include:
- Implementing contact precautions when a patient is found to have CRKP
- Urging microbiology labs to follow the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines, including the modified Hodge test
- Reviewing clinical culture results for the last six to 12 months and follow up investigations if organisms our found
