Retailers may have thought they were helping customers by giving away antibiotics for free, but health experts have said it could be detrimental in the long run.

Wegmans, ShopRite, Stop and Shop, and Giant Food, stores which offered antibiotics for free, all received letters from the CDC cautioning against the practice, according to MSNBC. The organization is concerned with the rise in drug resistant bugs. Greater access, especially during flu season, might seem like a good idea right now, but could create future health concerns.

CDC officials are worried that patients will begin asking their doctors for antibiotics more often. Supermarkets on the other hand, contend they want to provide a service for customers and they aren’t the “prescription police.”
