Tip of the week: Clean your phones

Infection Control Weekly Monitor, March 11, 2009

Something used dozens of times each day could be contributing to the spread of MRSA.

A Turkish study found that 95 percent of mobile phone headsets used by nurses and doctors working at a hospital were contaminated with bacteria including MRSA, according to HealthDay. The researchers also found that only 10 percent of staff members regularly cleaned their phones.

The authors suggested that these mobile phones could facilitate patient-to-patient transmission as a result of cross contamination with mobile phones. The authors recommend proactive strategies to clean these devices in order to prevent that transmission.
