The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has selected hospital associations in 10 different states to participate in a program which will test methods to reduces central-line associated bloodstream infections in Intensive Care Units (ICU).

The 10 states are California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington. The project is being funded by a three-year $3 million contract awarded to the Health Research and Educational Trust (HRET) by AHRQ. The project aims to reduce the average rate of central-line associated bloodstream infection by continuing the work that originated at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, which was later implemented state-wide in Michigan. That state-wide program helped reduced infection rates to zero in more than 50% of hospitals within the first three months.
