After numerous studies, AIDS researchers have encountered encouraging results in preventing HIV with pharmaceuticals, especially for women.
Two experiments on monkeys showed that antiretroviral (ARV) drugs, given orally or in the form of a vaginal gel, where highly effective in blocking the virus, according to the Washington Post.
A third study on 3,100 women in the U.S. and Africa showed a vaginal gel that reduced the risk of infection by only 30 percent over two years. However, British and African researchers are testing the same microbicide on 9,400 women, and could have interim results later this year.
Experts believe a virus-blocking substance will be the most important tool in fighting the disease.
