In September 2008, an independent foundation that began by inspecting and evaluating Norwegian merchant vessels became the first new organization approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to accredit hospitals in 30 years.
Det Norske Veritas (DNV), which is headquartered in Oslo, Norway, is now a fourth choice for U.S. hospitals seeking to demonstrate that they meet CMS’ Conditions of Participation (CoP). Hospitals can also opt for an accreditation survey from The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) or the American Osteopathic Association, or undergo a CMS survey carried out by their state’s Department of Health.
