Three of the five Joint Commission 2008 Ernest A. Codman Awards were bestowed on hospitals whose IC projects helped decrease rates of, or improve outcomes for, infections in their facilities.

The hospitals’ interventions helped improve hand hygiene, reduce deaths from sepsis, and prevent surgical infections by focusing on the accurate and timely administration of antibiotics.

The Codman award recognizes facilities and individuals achieving superlative healthcare quality improvement.

A panel of national experts selected Novant Health in Winston-Salem, NC, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, as the 2008 winners. The following are the winners’ stories.
