- Explain why physicians are a challenge when it comes to following IC policies
Under Joint Commission standard IC.02.03.01, an organization must work to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases among patients, licensed independent practitioners (LIP), and staff members.
In regard to this standard, found in the infection prevention and control chapter of the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals, ICPs need to focus on isolation protocols, proper use of hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, and disinfection of equipment, says Peggy Luebbert, MS, MT(ASCP), CIC, CHSP, independent consultant and owner of Healthcare Interventions, Inc., in Omaha, NE.
The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) will want to see that your organization has written policies and procedures to demonstrate how your hospital interprets related guidelines. It will also require your organization to educate patients, LIPs, and staff members about them.
