The death of a Brazilian model from a drug-resistant infection that rarely strikes young, healthy people made news this week.

Twenty-year-old Mariana Bridi died January 24 from complications related to a generalized infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, according to the Associated Press (AP). The bacterium is known to be resistant to multiple kinds of antibiotics. Bridi had been hospitalized since January 3 and physicians amputated her feet and hands in an effort to save her life. She was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection that spread out of control, the AP reported.
