From an IC perspective, the first steps of a construction or renovation project in your hospital is to conduct a preconstruction risk assessment, says Thomas Huser, MS, CHSP, a safety coordinator at Clarian Health in Indianapolis.
The Joint Commission requires such an assessment in its environment of care standards, which call upon hospitals to properly oversee construction sites. As part of the risk assessment, determine which patients are most likely to be affected by any renovation or construction and move them before work begins.
You can learn more about protecting patients during construction and renovation in the upcoming audioconference on February 25 “Infection Control During Construction and Renovation: A Multidiscplinary Approach to Joint Commission Compliance.” Huser and Marge McFarland, MS, CHSP, will answer your questions.
