New Jersey is the first state in the nation to require flu vaccinations for young school children. And with a December 31 deadline for parents, the state will soon find out how many children met the requirement.

The law requires children between six months and five years attending licensed pre-school and child care centers to get flu shots. A key test to its effectiveness is expected as thousands of kids return to classrooms and playrooms this week after the holiday break, The New York Times reported. The state relies on schools, preschools, and day care centers to collect immunization records from parents and forward the information.

Children who don’t get the shot are to be excluded from attending, unless parents can provide proof they are in the process of getting a vaccination for their child within two weeks after the deadline.
