The CDC alerted healthcare professionals earlier this month that a prevalent strain of influenza is resistant to the antiviral drug oseltamivir, also known as Tamiflu. CDC officials said physicians should add another drug or use an alternative to treat such flu cases.

The CDC said although influenza activity is low in the United States so far this flu season, preliminary data from a limited number of states indicate that the prevalence of influenza A (H1N1) virus strains resistant to the antiviral medication oseltamivir is high. When influenza A virus infection or exposure is suspected, healthcare workers are advised to use zanamivir or a combination of oseltamivir and rimantadine as more appropriate options than oseltamivir alone.
