Smokers, along with children and the elderly, should receive a pneumonia vaccination, according to a new recommendation from a CDC advisory group.
If the CDC accepts the recommendation, it would be the first vaccine recommendation aimed specifically at smokers, according to Reuters news service.
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) had been asked to consider whether the pneumonia vaccine might benefit smokers, who generally have a higher risk of lung and respiratory infections. The ACIP voted to recommend the CDC endorse the vaccine for smokers ages 19 through 64, the news service reported. The committee also recommended smokers who receive the shot also undergo counseling to stop smoking, a CDC spokesman told Reuters.
