U.S. hospitals are not alone in their battle to prevent healthcare-acquired conditions.
One in 10 patients “suffer adverse effects” while being treated in European hospitals, according to the European Union’s health commissioner who called on the 27 member states to take steps to improve patient care.
The most common hospital-induced problems include healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), incorrect or delayed diagnoses, surgical errors, and medication-related errors, according to the health commissioner. Approximately one in 20 patients suffer an HAI; MRSA, which was once very rare, now causes 37,000 deaths a year throughout the European Union, according to the report by Agence France Presse.
