Experimental vaccine could protect against malaria

An experimental malaria vaccine is the most promising yet and was able to reduce the rate of infection and disease in children by up to 65% in two studies in Africa, researchers reported this week.    

Researchers have been trying to develop a vaccine for the deadly mosquito-borne illness that kills almost a million people a year and sickens 250 million others. Tests in Kenya and Tanzania showed GlaxoSmithKline’s vaccine could protect babies and toddlers from malaria infection and could prevent disease even in those already infected.
