Tip of the week: More on skyrocketing MRSA rates
Infection Control Weekly Monitor, December 10, 2008
Hospitals in Washington state, like much of the country, are finding MRSA rates growing at an alarming rate. The Seattle Times recently published a special report on the superbug based on data from millions of electronic hospital records.
Findings show that in 1997 only 141 cases of MRSA were reported, but in 2007 that number had climbed to 4,723. Other stories in the series expose the way in which many hospitals are not doing enough to prevent the spread of MRSA. Techniques such as screening every patient on admission occur infrequently. Another article highlights how records of MRSA rates are not made public in some states, and other states don't require hospitals to track the infection rates.
