Hospital infection lawsuits on the rise

Medical malpractice lawsuits filed over infections acquired by patients in hospitals are increasing nationwide, according to a report in the Maryland Daily Record.
A number of lawsuits have resulted in multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements this year, the newspaper reported. Betsy McCaughy, founder and chair of the nonprofit patient safety group, Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths, told the newspaper that hospitals must vigorously comply with infection prevention protocols or risk litigation.
“This is the next asbestos,” McCaughy said, comparing the rise in hospital infection lawsuits to asbestos litigation. “Now that the evidence is overwhelming that nearly all infections are preventable, hospitals that don’t follow the proven protocols are inviting lawsuits.” To read the full story, click here.
