Hospitals should take IC into account in design and construction

Infection Control Weekly Monitor, November 26, 2008

Hospital design characteristics can improve patient safety and healthcare outcomes, and provide a supportive environment for staff. Yet, most new hospitals are not being built to be “safe by design,” according to a new study by The Joint Commission that addressed future hospital development.

To meet that goal, the Joint Commission report calls for hospitals of the future to address high-level priorities in their design and construction, such as infection control and emergency preparedness. Hospital design was one of five core areas addressed in the Joint Commission report Health Care at the Crossroads: Guiding Principles for the Development of the Hospital of the Future.
