When Baton Rouge (LA) General Hospital began seeing highly susceptible patients develop multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter (MDR-ACIN) infections, such as pneumonias and central-line bloodstream infections, ICP Connie DeLeo, BS, MT(ASCP), CIC, says she knew she had to move quickly to contain its spread.
MDR-ACIN outbreaks have shut down entire ICUs. And in an area of the country where ICU beds are already in short supply—in part due to an influx of new residents who fled New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina—closing the doors of an ICU could have a devastating effect.
