The government needs to strengthen its ability to respond to incidents involving people with drug-resistant infectious TB, according to a new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report.

The GAO studied the capability of the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Homeland Security, the two agencies that worked with state and local health officials in the spring of 2007 to interdict two individuals with drug-resistant TB from crossing U.S. borders and directing them to treatment.

The GAO said various factors, including a lack of comprehensive procedures for information sharing and coordination, as well as border inspection shortfalls, hindered the federal response to those two TB incidents. While both agencies have implemented procedures and tools to address identified problems, the GAO recommended additional steps, including enhancing their capability to create public health alerts.
