GAO study says country needs to prepare for large-scale health emergencies

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has compiled a list of top 13 “urgent issues” needing the attention of President-Elect Barack Obama and the 111th Congress, including the need to prepare for large-scale health emergencies and improve food safety.

In a press release and statements issued Nov. 6, the GAO calls on the government to take steps to strengthen public health preparedness, especially for pandemic influenza. The government needs to develop the health system’s surge capacity to handle large numbers of casualties, the GAO said.

The country also needs to improve coordination of food safety efforts, including the ability to react more quickly to outbreaks of food-borne illnesses, the GAO said. To read more, click here.
