In another report, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) looked at healthcare-associated infections (HAI) in hospitals associated with medical devices.

The GAO concluded that available federal and state data do not provide a national estimate of the number of HAIs associated with medical devices, but said experts report that provider practices are a significant factor in these infections.

Improper patient examination and treatment practices by healthcare professionals, such as improper insertion of urinary catheters, are the most significant factor affecting the occurrence of these infections, the GAO said. Certain in-hospital sterilization techniques and improper handling of sterilized medical devices were also commonly identified as significant causes of infections.
