More leadership from hospital executives and physicians is needed to help prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and make patient care safer, as indicated by survey of over 900 hospital professionals.

The survey of 934 ICPs, quality, safety, and risk-management personnel, was released last week by APIC and Premier, a hospital quality alliance. The survey indicated only 15% of respondents thought their hospital executives and medical staff leaders were actively involved in reducing infections in their facilities, despite the fact 30.3% said those same executives are the most important resource to meet HAI challenges.

The survey also revealed that the most challenging infection prevention intervention to implement was removing unnecessary indwelling urinary catheters to prevent urinary tract infections. To read a press release and view the survey results, click here.
